Everything You Need to Know About Skip Hire

If you have not hired skips in Ipswich before, you’re probably wondering where to start.

Here’s an overview of everything you need to know. When you’re ready, you can book online or contact us with a question.

1. What can’t I put in a skip?

There are some items that we cannot dispose of, which include the following:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Gas canisters
  • Asbestos
  • Batteries
  • Fridges

Prohibited items are usually returned and there may be an additional charge. If your skip is roadside we strongly advise you to check their skip in case passers-by have thrown rubbish into it.

If in doubt, check before disposing of any item that concerns you. We’re always happy to help if you’re unsure.

2. Do I need to get a skip permit?

If you intend to put a skip on a public highway, we will contact your local council to arrange a permit. You will need to pay a non-refundable fee and it takes 5 working days for us to make arrangements.

3. What skip size do I need?

This will depend on how much and the type of waste do you need to dispose of. It does not make sense to pay for space you’re not going to use. Estimate how much rubbish you will need to get rid of before organising your hire.

We offer skip hire throughout Thetford in many sizes. If you’re clearing your garden or small home, our mini 2-yard skips can often be sufficient.

Do you need to get rid of bigger heavy-duty items, like rubble and concrete as part of a building project? One of our 8-yard skips would probably be more suitable.

You can find a full list of our skip hire sizes here. Once you have decided which one suits your requirements, you can book online.

4. Other popular FAQs

Can my skip be lifted over a wall?

Yes, but please confirm prior to booking that your wall is not higher than 3ft.

How much can I put in my skip?

Please don’t overfill it. If it’s greater than level, it could overflow and our driver may not be able to remove the load safely.

Are your skips equipped with doors?

Some of our midi 4-yard skips have a drop front, so please check before booking. Our 6- and 8- yard skips feature a drop-front but our mini and 12-yard options don’t.

How long can I keep my skip?

The fee you pay includes the use of your skip for up to two weeks. When you are ready, get in touch and we will arrange a collection.

Choosing The Right Skip Hire For Your Use

If you ever need to hire a skip, Ipswich has a large range of options available to you. Deciding which skip hire company to use can be a tricky task. Here are four top tips to help you choose the right skip hire company:

Do your research

If you search online for ‘skip hire near me’, you’ll not only find a wide range of options, but you’ll also discover plenty of reviews. Make sure you read what other people have to say about the skip hire companies in your area. It will give you a good idea of the quality of service you can expect, as well as knowing the logistics of how the project will be carried out.

Set your budget

There’s a wide range of prices you can pay for skips. Ipswich has a huge variety of skip hire options – most list their prices online, some even allow you to book online, but you might need to call up a few to discuss pricing options.

Pick the right size and duration

Skips come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re undertaking extensive building work, you will probably need to hire a large skip for a long time. However, if you’re just planning to clean some garden waste, then a small skip for a couple of days will probably suffice. Usually, skip hire is for a fixed term, but some companies offer flexible contracts. Ideal if you are unsure of the length of time you will need the skip for.

Check compliance

Skip hire companies have to comply with rigorous UK government environmental guidelines This ensures that they are operating ethically and in an environmentally friendly way. Before booking, make sure you check to see that the skip hire company is fully licenced.

Skip Hire in Thetford And How To Utilise It Properly

Skip Hire in Thetford And How To Utilise It Properly

When should you hire a skip?

If you’ve undertaken an extensive house clearout or refurbished a room, chances are you will have accumulated far too much rubbish for your local waste collection service to take away. This can be especially problematic if you live in a built-up area, a flat or anywhere that has no suitable place to leave excess waste.

Hiring a skip is a practical, environmentally friendly, cost-saving, and safe way of disposing of your waste. Searching for ‘skip hire near me’ is relatively straightforward, but making the most of your skip hire can be tricky.

3 Tips on How to Properly Utilise Your Skip Hire

Don’t go for the cheapest option

It can be tempting to just search for ‘cheap skip hire near me’, but that isn’t necessarily the best option. For a start, skip hire companies in Thetford won’t be able to give you an exact quote, as waste disposal is charged by the tonne. Until they’ve collected your waste and disposed of it, they won’t know the exact cost to charge you. Finding cheap skip hire might seem like a great idea, but it may end up costing you more.

It’s also likely that picking the cheapest option will mean that your waste isn’t disposed of responsibly.

Order a larger skip

Your skip will have a ‘fill line’ that indicates the maximum load it can hold. Whilst it might be tempting to go over that line, doing so will mean that legally the skip hire company cannot remove it. The best way of avoiding this is to hire a skip one size higher than you anticipate needing.

Don’t panic

If your skip is due to be delivered towards the end of the day, there’s a good chance it will be late. This isn’t because the skip hire company has forgotten about you or there’s a problem with your delivery. It’s simply because there are a lot of logistics involved in dropping off skips and disposing of waste and therefore a lot of potential for delays. For example, somebody overfilling their skip!
